2019 Artist: Karen Cooper
"A Brief Aside. Pushkin Festival," by Karen Cooper of Grinnell. Oil painting on stretched canvas. At the Pushkin Festival on a perfect summer day, Korenevshchino, Russia.
Karen is a new artist to us this year.
"I am a people watcher. I do it with intensity. And then I paint it. The absolute necessity of the matter, and what drives me forward, is that the painting must be a thing of substance and beauty..."
Karen is originally from Nebraska, but now makes her home in Iowa. She spent four years living in Lipetsk, Russia and studying with an artist there, and it is while there that Russian impressionist art had a potent impact on her and her work.
You would know all of this about her, too, it you were to spend a little time at https://karencooperpaintings.com/.
